Why your pet needs a cool place to rest.
Heat-related illness doesn't only happen outdoors
Among UK dogs treated for heat-related illness, hot indoor environments were recorded as a trigger in 8.3% of cases — heat indoors is a documented risk, not only hot cars or the outdoors.
Indoor heat is a real, recorded trigger of canine heat-related illness.
So the place your pet rests indoors matters. A consistently cooler resting spot helps them stay comfortable through hot days.
Source: RVC VetCompass (Royal Veterinary College), UK, 2022 — 167,751 dogs in emergency care. The remaining share covers all cases where indoor heat was not recorded as a trigger — it is not a count of "outdoor cases."
What actually triggers heatstroke in dogs
Recorded triggers of canine heat-related illness. Cases can have more than one trigger, so the values add up to more than 100%. Hot indoor environments sit on the same list as exercise, cars and the outdoors.
Source: RVC VetCompass, UK, 2022 (167,751 dogs in emergency care). Triggers are not mutually exclusive — 9.5% of cases had multiple triggers recorded, so percentages sum to more than 100%.
Dogs can't cool down the way we do
Dogs sweat only a little through their paw pads and rely mainly on panting to regulate temperature. Because of that, only a few degrees separate a normal body temperature from a heatstroke warning sign.
